Google reviews: how to ask without feeling like you are begging

By Steve · updated July 2026

Almost every owner I know wants more reviews and none of them dares to ask, because it feels like begging. The problem is not asking: it is asking badly, at the wrong moment and with the wrong link. In this workshop I build your system to ask naturally, with a message people actually answer, and show you how to reply to all of them, including the ones that sting.

Why reviews move the map

Google decides who to show on Maps with three things: how close you are to the person searching, how well your listing matches what they searched, and how well known you are. The first two are barely up to you. The third one is, and reviews are the part that gives you the most control.

And here is the detail almost nobody uses: the text of the review counts too. When a customer writes "they fixed the leak in my neighborhood", those words land on your listing written by someone else, which is exactly what Google treats as credible. That is why a three line review is worth far more than five stars with no text.

The exact moment to ask

You ask for the review the minute the customer is happy, not on the Tuesday you remembered. That moment has a name: they just got what they came for and they are still holding it.

If you serve people in person, ask right there and send the link on WhatsApp before they leave. If you deliver or install, ask when you finish. If it is a long project, ask the moment the customer says the first good thing, not three weeks later at the closing meeting.

• Ask one by one, with their name and context. Batch sends feel like batch sends, and almost nobody answers them.
• Ask 3 to 5 a week, not 40 in a day. A strange spike is exactly what Google filters.
• Ask yourself, not your system. The same sentence, from you, converts several times better.

The right link, the one that opens the writing window

This is where most people lose it. They send the link to their listing, the customer lands on the map, has to hunt for the button, gets distracted and writes nothing. What you need is the link that opens the review window directly, with the stars ready.

That link looks like this: g.page/r/<your business id>/review. It comes from your own Business Profile, in the ask for reviews option, and it is not something you invent or guess.

With that link in hand, everything else is distribution: the WhatsApp message, a QR code on the counter, your email signature, the receipt. One destination, repeated everywhere.

The message people actually answer

Short, personal, with the link at the end. No paragraphs, no "your opinion is very important to us". Something like this works:

"Hi Laura, glad the install turned out well. If you take a minute to leave me a review on Google it helps me a lot so more people in the neighborhood find me. Here it is, straight to it: (your link)".

Two details that raise the quality of what they write: ask them to say what you solved for them and to mention what part of town they are in. Do not dictate the text, because copy paste reviews show, and you do not want those.

Reply to all of them, especially the bad ones

Replying is half the work and almost nobody does it. Answer all of them within 24 to 48 hours, short, in your own voice, without a repeated template. On the good ones, say thank you and name the service they put in writing.

On a bad one, the reply is not for the person who wrote it: it is for the fifty who will read it later. That is why you never fight. You acknowledge what happened, say what you will do, and offer to solve it outside, with your phone or your email. One bad review answered well convinces more than ten five star ones.

If the review is fake, from someone who was never your customer, answer it with facts and report it from your listing. Google does not always take it down, which is exactly why the reply matters: it is the only part you control.

What you must never do

This is where businesses get into real trouble, almost always following advice from someone who promised fast results.

Never buy reviews: Google detects them, removes them and can penalize your whole listing, and recovering a penalized listing takes months. Never offer discounts or gifts in exchange for a review, because it goes against Google's policies. Never gate, meaning ask first if they are happy and only send the link to the ones who said yes. And no reviews from the shop wifi, your employees' phones or your family's.

• Buying reviews: risk of losing your listing, never worth it.
• Paying or gifting for reviews: against Google's policies.
• Gating for happy customers only: also against the rules, and the pattern shows.
• Asking your family: reviews with no real visit, easy to detect.

Frequently asked questions

How many reviews do I need?

There is no magic number, and be wary of anyone who gives you one. What does show is the rhythm: a business adding new reviews every week looks alive, and one with forty reviews from last year looks abandoned. Three a month, always, beats thirty in one week and nothing after.

Can I give a discount in exchange for a review?

No. It goes against Google's policies and it is one of the things that does bring consequences for your listing. What you can do is ask well, at the right moment, making the link easy: that moves far more than you think, without risking anything.

Someone left me an unfair one star review, what do I do?

Reply within 48 hours, without fighting, acknowledging what you can and offering to solve it by phone or email. Report it from your listing if the person was never your customer. And keep adding new reviews: the best defense against a bad one is having it buried under recent ones.

Is it fine to ask for reviews on WhatsApp?

Yes, and it is the channel that works best, as long as it is an individual message to someone who really was your customer. What does not work is a broadcast list with the same text for everyone: it feels mass produced, almost nobody opens it, and you cannot tell who actually bought from you.
